| About Us
TwoSmilingDogs is the culmination of an almost year-long search for the just right products and our prime Hamden location. Owner Susan Kordzek plans to utilize her retail experience as a former Hallmark store owner, and her passion for animals in this new venture.
Susan has been an animal protection and rights advocate for nearly 30 years, is a vegetarian, and for the past three years has been an adoption counselor for B.O.N.E.S. (Beagles of New England States) (link). Her husband Richard is a self-employed carpenter and some of his custom created book cases will be on display and for sale in the store. An animal lover as well, Richard constructed a feral cat shelter, as seen on Alley Cat Allies, to protect the family of feral cats (all spayed, neutered and immunized) that they care for. They have two grown daughters, who are also vegetarians and committed to animal welfare. "Luke," a New Skete german shepherd, "Charlie," a beagle mix, and three indoor cats currently share their lives.
It is Susan’s hope that TwoSmilingDogs will be a place to enjoy the fun of pet guardianship—to create a personal and friendly shopping experience and honor the companions who have touched our lives. Personally and through beagle rescue, she knows the pain that is experienced with the loss of a cherished pet. She has searched numerous catalogs to find fitting pet sympathy cards as well as urns and memorial frames. The name, TwoSmilingDogs, is in honor of "Cassie" and "Pris," two soul mates who have crossed the Rainbow Bridge, yet always smile down on Susan and Richard, and have left footprints on their hearts. In addition, through the shop, she hopes to motivate some awareness of community issues, work with the Hamden ACO to promote spay and neuter programs, and help raise funds for both the Hamden Animal Shelter and the Hamden R-DOG dog park (link).
